Structure
The STAR-SK separators are made of reinforced concrete or PEHD tanks with a cover and a manhole. Internal walls of the concrete tanks are additionally protected with a layer that guarantee tightness. Inside the tanks there is a coalescence filter which guarantees reduction of the content of petroleum derivative substances on the separator outlet to the required level of 5 mg/gm3. The number of filters and their surface depends on the nominal flow which is characteristic for a given device. Inside the filtrating chamber there is a float tared to the density of the predicted petroleum derivative substances. In order to protect the separator against hydraulic overhaul and drainage of light-weight substance one should, in line with the Resolution of the Minister of the Environment of 24.07.2006, use a by-pass for rain water flows exceeding 15 l/s for 1ha. In case of deep foundation there are extra extension circles on the tank.
Operation principle
Operation of coalescence separators is based on sedimentation and flotation processes during laminar flow of surface waters thought the separator chamber. Petroleum derivative substances are separated in two phases. In the preliminary settlement tanks impurities such as sand, gravel or suspended mater get arrested. The regular impurities flowing into the settlement tank are characterized by high flow dynamics which is reduced by the use of a deflector at the inflow. Thanks to that the waste water flows gently from the settlement tank to the separators and oil particle are not too dispersed. This does not lead to excessive snatch load of the coalescence filters of the separator where the petroleum derivative substances are properly separated. The separated particles float on the surface and form an oil film. Treated water is directed to a sewage system. Once a maximum content of petroleum derivative substances is reached, the float automatically closes to inflow of oily waste water to the sewage system.
Operation
Operation manner consistent with warranty conditions and periodic overhauls guarantee proper operation of the separator. Companies with relevant licenses take care of removing the impurities form the separator. It is important to remember that after emptying the separator, first from the impurities layer and then from water, it needs to be refilled with water. The coalescence filtered needs to be inspected and flushed with water.
